National Highways warned motorists about the disruption and thanked them for their patience.
A statement at the time said: "The fire service is now on scene with the car fire. Once they've given the OK we will release traffic in two lanes past the scene."
At around 8.30pm, there were delays of 30 minutes as one lane remained closed southbound near Cherwell Valley Services.
A further update from National Highways at around 9.50pm on Friday confirmed the scene had been cleared with no delays.
