Thousands of people turned out to join the festive fun and help launch Christmas in Bicester this Saturday.

Organised by Bicester Town Council and OneBicester, the day involved a host of fun activities including ice skating, a mini fun fair, nativity animals and a Christmas market in the Methodist Church Hall.

Mayor Councillor Nicholas Mawer was joined by two children who won a place on the stage after winning the best lantern competition, and together they pressed the button which lit up the town.

Local groups performed during the day on a stage set up in Market Square. These included the mini police from Glory Farm School, dancers from Just Dance, ECU Cheerleaders and performances by Rhythm Street, Rock Choir and James Farrant. Sparky and Sprite also made a welcome return to compere the show.

Returning with its popular lantern-making session was OYAP, which threw open the doors of its Studio2, at the former St Edburg’s School, in Cemetery Road, to host a workshop.

At dusk, all those who had made lanterns took part in a parade along the Causeway and into Market Square to show off their creations.

There were three winners for the best lantern contest, Harley, who attends Glory Farm Primary School, Cooper School pupil Casey and Alma, who goes to Gagle Brook School.

Councillor Mawer said: “It was a wonderful day and despite the weather I think everyone had a great time and enjoyed the festive fun.

“It was an honour to help switch-on the Christmas lights for Bicester and I hope people will enjoy the festive feel of the town centre over the next few weeks in the run-up to the big day.”

The town council’s first ever illuminated Christmas lights trail opens on December 7 and runs until December 12.

Visitors can walk around the grounds of Garth Park which will be alive with colour each evening from 4pm to 10pm.
