CHINNOR Wildboys hit a remarkable milestone earlier this month when their unbeaten run was stretched to five years.

The Wildboys, Chinnor’s 3rd XV, haven’t lost in 72 league matches – a run which consists of 70 wins and two draws.

Their last defeat came against Bracknell 2nds on January 13, 2018.

A 24-0 win over Bletchley on January 7 saw the Wildboys smash the five-year unbeaten mark.

The victory kept them top of Counties 1 Tribute Southern North, where they are four points ahead of Marlow and with a game in hand.

Ben McIntosh (2), Harry Lowe and Joe Chapman crossed for the Wildboys against Bletchley, at a wet and windy Kingsey Road.

Co-captain Lowe praised the togetherness at Chinnor, running through from the first team and across the club.

He told the Oxford Mail: “It’s mad really. Me and Dan [Coulon] took over the captaincy two years ago, and it’s a bit surreal being involved with it all.

“The main thing from the lads is to keep it going.

“It’s nice to see everyone from different avenues enjoying their rugby.

“The amount of trust in the boys who are playing is as high as it can be.

“We have a lot of good relationships with the senior squad and some of them might come along for the odd game to show their support from the sidelines.

“There’s a good camaraderie between the boys and no divide between the two sides, they have a lot of time for us.”

Lowe added: “It’s a long time for anything and we’ve been through a lot in that time.

“Every team has ups and downs, players come and go, and there’s young lads here who don’t remember the start of the run but that’s great for progression though.”

Last season, the Wildboys won Berks Bucks and Oxon Division 1 for a third year in a row.

In May, they were placed in Counties 1 Tribute Southern North, the seventh tier in England, after the Rugby Football Union finalised league restructuring.

It meant the Wildboys effectively jumped two levels but have so far taken to the seventh tier like a duck to water.

Asked whether another promotion was the aim this season, Lowe was relaxed on setting any targets for himself and his teammates.

He said: “There’s no long-term goal that we’ve necessarily set, especially with stepping into a new league this year.

“If it carries on going, then there’s a chance of another promotion, but it’s about taking things one at a time.”
