Costa Coffee and Burger King could open new drive-thrus if a planning application is approved.

Plans are in for a proposed coffee shop and a restaurant with lanes at Southam Road in Banbury.

Burger King and Costa have agreed to operate the units upon receipt of a satisfactory planning permission.

The new facility will create some 37 new jobs.

The site at the corner of Southam Road and Pipe Lane was originally built to be a vehicle repair garage and car showroom.

Half the site is currently used as a hand car wash and the other half as a car repair centre.

Bicester Advertiser:

Fretwell Investment Ltd propose to demolish the existing buildings to add the drive-thrus.

The facility would be accessed from a new junction that would be created on to Southam Road.

There would be a 24-space car park and access for pedestrians from an existing footpath on Southam Road.

A design and access statement says: "Southam Road is a principal gateway into the town centre and would be enhanced by the proposed development.

"No drive-through restaurant presently exists on an arterial route into the town centre (other facilities are located on Banbury Cross Retail Park off Hennef Way and Banbury Gateway Shopping Park).

"The co-existence of drive-through restaurants with other retail parks in the town is a further illustration of the suitability of this site for the proposal."

Bicester Advertiser:

It concludes: "The design meets all relevant considerations and is entirely appropriate in scale and form for this site and its environs and we recommend its approval to the council."

A transport statement says the plans "can be accommodated without detriment to the safety and operating capacity of the local highway network".

The application will now be considered by Cherwell District Council.
