Carpetright is to close all of its four stores in Oxfordshire after going into administration.

The flooring retailer has been bought in a rescue deal by rival Tapi, but will shut more than 200 stores including two in Oxford, one in Abingdon and one in Banbury.

More than 1,000 staff are set to lose their jobs.

It was announced on Monday the flooring retailer Tapi had agreed to buy 54 Carpetright stores, two warehouses, the brand and its intellectual property.

However, the deal will not save the majority of the business, including its head office in Purfleet, Essex.

213 stores are expected to close over the coming days, according to PwC.

Carpetright employed more than 1,800 staff before entering into insolvency. It also had 273 shops across the country.

Jeevan Karir, managing director of Tapi, said that initially it had wanted to save Carpetright in its entirety but it "quickly established" that doing so was "unviable".

He said: "The business has been materially loss making for a number of years and it has significant debt held by the owner.

"We then turned ourselves to trying to save a number of stores whilst being mindful of how the competition authorities would look at any deal. So, we arrived at 54 stores and two supporting warehouses all of which are exceptional and that we’d be proud to have as part of the Tapi family.”
