An Oxfordshire fish and chip shop’s cleanliness has been called into question by food hygiene inspectors.

Market Square Fish Bar on Market Square in Bicester was inspected by Cherwell District Council’s Environmental Health team on Thursday, June 13.

Serving a variety of chippy dishes including, fish and chips, the eatery has proved popular with Bicester locals over the years.

However, inspectors found that “improvement” was “necessary” and handed the business a poor two-out-of-five food hygiene rating.

One major issue at the chippy was its cleanliness and condition of the facilities and building, which were also described as needing “improvement”.

This includes having an appropriate layout, ventilation, hand washing facilities and pest control to enable good food hygiene.

Despite facing problems in that regard, the eatery’s hygienic food handling was rated as “generally satisfactory”.

This refers to the preparation, cooking, re-heating, cooling and storage of food.

Similarly, Market Square Fish Bar’s management of food safety was rated as “generally satisfactory”.

This refers to whether there is a system or checks in place to ensure that food sold or served at the venue is safe to eat.

It also concerns whether there is evidence that staff know about food safety and if the food safety officer has confidence that standards will be maintained in future.

The Oxford Mail has approached Market Square Fish Bar for comment.
