A GUTTED Luke Evans insists it was not viable for Alchester to embark on a tenth campaign of competitive rugby.
The north Oxfordshire side announced last week they would not be fielding a team for the 2016-17 season after the decision was finalised at a committee meeting.
Alchester, who formed in 2006 from Bicester’s colts side, were expected to compete in the Berks, Bucks & Oxon Premier – the eighth tier of English rugby – but have been unable to attract new players.
The side, who spent four seasons at the level above in Southern Counties North, struggled throughout last year with a small squad.
And with a number of players leaving the club over the summer, they have been unable to bring in reinforcements.
Loose-head prop Evans, who also acts as Alchester’s press officer, said: “We had three or four leave, but they were taken from a core of 15.
“It left us in a tough position and we needed 20 committed players to make it viable.”
Evans, who will play for Brackley this season as a result, added: “It is a bit gutting.
“At the end of last season it was very much a rebuilding job over the summer.
“And by the time we got to our first pre-season game we did not have the numbers to warrant keeping the team together.
“We did a few things, we put out adverts and banners, but I think the problem is we are in between Banbury, Bicester, Brackley and Towcester.
“In terms of a geographical location we are a village with a small catchment.”
The club will still be active, with social events, friendly matches and youth coaching sessions planned over the next 12 months.
Evans said: “There will be a social game some time around Christmas and three or four sessions throughout the year for kids who will get their first taste of rugby.”
