JADE O’Dowda is in contention for a medal going into day two of the heptathlon at the Commonwealth Games.
The former Oxford City AC star is fifth in the standings after four events, just 22 points behind third-placed Taneille Crase.
O’Dowda, from Kidlington, resumes today with the long jump at 10.50am, before competing in the javelin shortly after 7pm and ending with the 800m at 9pm.
The 22-year-old produced a string of solid performances on her first day at a senior major championships to rack up 3,582 points .
Her first event at Birmingham’s Alexander Stadium was the 100m hurdles and she clocked 13.6 seconds to finish third.
Next came the high jump and O’Dowda was in the mix again, managing 1.75m to take fifth.
Her highest finish of day one was in the shot put, when a distance of 13.29 metres was enough for second place.
O’Dowda finished with fourth in the 200m, crossing the line in 25.04 seconds.
Meanwhile, Kieran Bird was part of a record-breaking 4x200m freestyle relay with Team Wales – but a medal proved just out of reach.
The Bicester swimmer was tasked with the anchor leg at Sandwell Aquatics Centre and was edged into fourth place by Scotland’s multi Olympic-medallist Duncan Scott.
Bird still made history, though, as Wales’ time of 7min 10.640secs smashed the national record by more than five seconds.
