OXFORD United have made their tenth summer signing with the capture of versatile winger Matt Phillips.

The 33-year-old left West Bromwich Albion as a free agent this summer, after eight years with the club.

He’s been training with United this week, and adds both quality and experience down the flanks for the U’s.

Phillips, who can also play in midfield, told the United club website: “I’m delighted. It’s a great opportunity for me and I can’t wait to get started.

“I’ve had a few days of training already and I’m delighted to get started. I noticed from walking in that it’s a very tight group that’s together, which showed in getting up through the play-offs.

“I want to have another successful season with the team here and I feel like I have a lot to offer. This is an opportunity for me to come and play football and really go and do something special.

“I don’t want to put a target on things. People might write us off, but I want to prove people wrong and reach for the stars and let us see where it takes us.”

Phillips came through the academy at Wycombe Wanderers, where he scored nine goals in 87 games.

He then joined Blackpool in August 2010 following their promotion to the Premier League, and scored just two minutes into his Seasiders debut as a substitute in a 2-1 defeat against Blackburn Rovers.

Phillips joined Sheffield United on loan during the 2011/12 season, scoring six goals in seven games, before returning to Bloomfield Road.

A Boxing Day hat-trick at Barnsley was among 12 goals netted for the Tangerines, who were beaten by West Ham United in the 2012 Championship play-off final.

His form for Blackpool led to him earning a first Scotland cap in May 2012.

Phillips signed for Queens Park Rangers for a reported £5 million in August 2013, and scored a memorable long-range strike from close to the centre circle against Crystal Palace in March 2015.

A £5.5m move to West Brom came in July 2016, and he grabbed his first international goal in March 2018, as Scotland beat Hungary 1-0 in a friendly.

During his final season with West Brom, he scored three times in 26 Championship appearances, and left the Baggies after netting 31 goals in 255 games.

In total during his club career, Phillips has scored 77 goals in 545 matches, including 12 strikes and 23 assists in 142 Premier League appearances.

Phillips has one goal in 16 caps for Scotland, with his last international match coming in September 2019.
