OXFORD United return from the international break by welcoming Stoke City to Grenoble Road tomorrow afternoon.

The U’s haven’t played the Potters since the 2000/01 campaign, when both sides were in the third tier.

United finished bottom that season and were relegated, while Stoke secured a play-off place by finishing fifth.

A number of players have represented both teams over the years, and we picked out five to have done so.

Michael Duberry

Famous for his spells at Chelsea and Leeds United at the beginning of his career, centre half Duberry joined the Potters, initially on loan from Leeds, in October 2004.

He impressed and joined on a permanent basis in March 2005, and in total, he made 102 appearances for the club.

After stints with Reading, Wycombe Wanderers and St Johnstone, Duberry joined the U’s in June 2011.

He spent two years with United, playing 50 games, and scored three goals.

Tariqe Fosu

The Reading academy graduate left the Royals for Charlton Athletic in June 2017, and after two years with the Addicks, he joined the U’s.

Fosu’s stint with United was short and sweet, but he made a huge impression. The winger scored 10 goals in 33 matches, including a hat-trick in a 6-0 win at Lincoln City.

He joined Brentford, alongside Shandon Baptiste, on January deadline day in 2020, and during his time with the Bees, he spent the first half of the 2022/23 season on loan with the Potters, making 20 appearances.

Fosu joined Sky Bet League One side Northampton Town as a free agent this summer.

Luke McNally

The U’s plucked centre back McNally from League of Ireland Premier Division side St Patrick’s Athletic in January 2021, and he caught the eye with his defensive skills and ability to bring the ball out from the back.

After 35 appearances, and four goals, McNally left for Burnley in a reported £1.6 million move.

He joined the Potters last season on loan, playing 41 times, and joined Bristol City on a permanent basis this summer.

Mark Stein

After permanent spells with Luton Town and Queens Park Rangers at the beginning of his career, South Africa-born Stein joined United in September 1989.

The striker scored 18 league goals in 82 games, but he took his goalscoring to another level when he moved to the Potters, initially on loan, in September 1991.

Sixty-eight strikes during his permanent stint with Stoke persuaded Chelsea to spend £1.5m on him in October 1993.

Stein netted 25 times for the Blues, and returned to the Potters on loan for two months from November 1996.

Dean Whitehead

U’s youth product Whitehead made 136 appearances for the club, scoring nine goals, before joining Sunderland in June 2004.

The Abingdon-born midfielder spent five years at the Stadium of Light, and was twice a Championship winner with the Black Cats.

He joined the Potters for £3m in July 2009, and made 158 appearances, including as a substitute in the 1-0 FA Cup final defeat to Manchester City in 2011.

Whitehead spent the final five years of his career with Middlesbrough and Huddersfield Town, and when he retired, he boasted 620 appearances on his CV, including 234 in the Premier League.
